Bilingual speech assessments can be tricky because we know that sounds from one language can influence sound production in the other language of a bilingual. In this workshop, we’ll walk through the process in its entirety and give you the opportunity to transcribe what you hear, analyze your data, design a dynamic assessment, make a diagnostic decision, and set intervention goals. We’ll not only describe the three main steps of a bilingual speech evaluation in great detail. We’ll show you how we walk through each step with real clients in video case studies. We’ll also give you the opportunity to walk through the entire process yourself with guidance so that the next time you are asked to do a bilingual speech evaluation, you’ll take it on with confidence.
Participants will:
Analyze speech samples to make decisions about language difference versus disorder
Analyze test protocol forms for qualitative information to include in diagnostic decisions.
Select dynamic assessment targets based on speech samples.
Design a speech treatment plan for a student from a bilingual environment.
Time-Ordered Agenda:
05 minutes: Introduction to topic and speaker
20 minutes: A framework for conducting speech assessments of bilingual students
20 minutes: Review of two case studies
40 minutes: Interactive video case studies
05 minutes: Conclusion and questions
Practitioners attending live events will be asked to answer questions at the end of the course about what they learned and how they will use the information they learned in practice. Once the questions (below) are completed, participants will receive their certificate.

Practitioners attending recorded sessions demonstrate learning and attendance by passing a quiz with a score of 80% or greater. The quiz addresses questions from material presented throughout the course. Practitioners can retake the quiz if they do not initially obtain a score of at least 80%. For events including case studies, participants download, read, and utilize materials in order to participate.
