Challenging behaviors can impede progress in during intervention and can have a negative impact on a child’s academic progress. Understanding the function of the behaviors is a critical part of setting the course to change the behaviors. In this workshop, we used videos to practice identifying the function of behaviors. We share research-based intervention strategies to help you effectively manage behaviors in the classroom. We will discuss the evaluation of behaviors that impact communication development and provide research-based intervention strategies to guide speech-language pathologists in developing effective treatment plans. And, we will include case studies of clinical interventions that improve communication in children with behavioral needs.

Participants will:

Compare and contrast the role of punishments and reinforcement in the management of behavior
Describe the relationship between behavior and communication
Effectively evaluate behaviors that negatively impact learning
List effective research-based intervention strategies for managing behavior
Develop a plan to address communication and behavior in intervention sessions

10 minutes Introduction to the topic
10 minutes Socio-emotional elements involved in addressing undesired behaviors
10 minutes How we identify the functions of behavior and considering the behavior chain
10 minutes Approaches to analyzing behaviors
10 minutes Intervention approaches
10 minutes Case studies and wrap-up
