If you are like us, dyslexia wasn’t covered too well (or at all!) during your grad school program and resources to help us learn on our own have been scarce. This has become a pretty big issue as more research comes out on the overlap between dyslexia and phonological issues and language. What this means for SLPs is that we NEED this knowledge to be able to best support our students who have dyslexia. Secondly, we NEED the knowledge to head off referrals that should be for dyslexia but might be confused with a communication disorder.

We have great news. A group of experts in California created free, online modules that cover the most important aspects of dyslexia for educators. We invited SLP Dr. Kai Greene from the University of California, Dominguez Hills to tell us about the modules, how he as an SLP influenced the content, and how to best apply the content to our caseload.

Dyslexia presents a unique challenge for SLPs because it is a language-based disorder that overlaps with the work we do related to phonological awareness and language comprehension. Yet, most of us have not had any dyslexia training and a little knowledge in this area can help us identify and support children with dyslexia on our caseload.

In this presentation, Dr. Kai Greene of California State University – Dominguez Hills shares some amazing and free resources to help SLPs and other educators get up to speed on current research and best practices for serving monolingual and bilingual students with dyslexia.
