When it comes to understanding how autism has evolved over the past half century, there are few more adept, invested, and knowledgeable than Dr. Barry Prizant. His work and research began decades ago and he is now recognized as among the world’s leading scholars on autism and neurodiversity. His book, Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism, has been published in 26 languages and was ranked by Book Authority as #1 of the “100 best books on autism of all time.”
We sat down with Dr. Prizant for an interview (and truthfully a little star-struck fanning) to hear about what events in his life led him to become the prolific researcher he is and such a leader for the autistic community. We also touched upon some of the things we can do today to provide outstanding support for our clients and students with autism. Here are the highlights in three short videos. Watch here and then join us for his full presentation!
How do we develop an abilities-based perspective instead of using a deficit-based approach?
The power of describing autistic behaviors as “enthusiasms” rather than “obsessions.”
How do we support a positive sense of self for autistic children and individuals? Enthusiasms and Validations.
