We know that client perspectives form one third of the Evidence Based Practice triad. But what does it look like to truly engage families in your practice?

This session explains the importance family centered interventions. Effective collaboration with our families maximizes clinical and educational efforts, supports the families’ goals, and incorporates functional outcomes for daily living activities. And as we know, families are experts on their own children and often provide vital information that we may miss in a more standardized setting. Participants walk away energized with evidence-based practices and specific strategies for intervention.

Per the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Evidence-Based Practice is comprised of three components. First, there’s the external evidence. Second, there’s clinical expertise/expert opinion. Third is the client/patient/caregiver perspectives. Each component of this trifecta is equally important. Let us take a moment to think about considerations regarding caretakers and families to maximize our communicative efforts. This course concludes by examining a long-term informal survey regarding what parents want from a speech-language pathologist.

Participants will:

Describe the role of family-centered practice within the scope of evidence-based practices.
Identify and describe the tenets of family-centered practice within the role and responsibilities of speech-language pathologists
