Fourth Grade

Fifth Grade

characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects
upon a topic; summarize the text.

Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade
1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and
teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6/grade 7/grade 8 topics, texts, and issues,
building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
2. Review the key ideas expressed and demonstrate understanding of multiple perspectives
through reflection and paraphrasing.
3. Present claims and findings, sequencing ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions,
facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes; use appropriate eye contact, adequate
volume, and clear pronunciation.
4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases
based on grade 6 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
5. Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in
word meanings.
Ninth and Tenth Grade
1. Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in
groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics, texts, and issues,
building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
