4. Goals need to be measurable
As SLPs, we know that it’s important to write good, measurable speech therapy goals. But are we
really thinking this through or just cutting and pasting? During the last three years, I have had a
chance to see tons of speech reports as I travel around the state doing re-evaluations. These IEPs
arrive from all over the country. Many reports contain brilliant goals but many simply do not. This
has changed my goal-writing-perspective greatly. Here are some sample goals:

5. Goals Need to Make an Impact
School professionals can benefit from learning from the clinical folks on this point. Clinic goals are
extremely obtainable in a 3-6 month window so that the client can continue to receive services and
funding. School professionals, we have to rely on teachers and parents to know what a child is doing
academically and what the needs of the home are. These are the environments where your student
will be practicing everything that you teach.
