Don’t you love it when something works
well and there is also science to back it
up? All joking aside, what we consider
“dynamic assessment” is actually a type
of testing activity that falls into a much
larger body of research called Mediated
Learning Experiences (MLEs).
MLEs are developed continually
throughout general education teaching
to make sure that what is being taught is
actually being learned by a student.
Reading, writing, and even math probes
teach a concept, check for
understanding, reteach the concept in a
very specific way, and test again. When
we think about dynamic assessment as
this broader educational tool, we see
that it has been studied and refined
across a very long time. We, as speech-
language pathologists, are using this
model to do the same thing, just in a
single window of time.
Did the child perform as we would
PART 3: THE SCIENCE expect? If not, let’s try to teach the
concepts so we know that it is truly a
deficit that we are dealing with and not
BEHIND DYNAMIC just poor performance because they
have never learned the concept. And if
ASSESSMENT we can teach it, let’s document how they
were successful so future teaching can
happen in the same way.
