Observation





                                                                                                    Let’s dive a little deeper into the
                                                                                                    process we, as SLPs, are going
                                                                                                    through during each of the DA
                                                                                                    components.

                                                                                                    During testing, we are looking for
                                                                                                    areas that are difficult for the child.
                                                                                                    We are looking for patterns of errors
                                                                                                    that we do not expect. We use those
                                                                                                    for our teaching component.

                                                                                                    During teaching, we are observing
                                                                                                    how many and what kinds of supports
                                                                                                    the child needs to be successful. We
                                                                                                    look for responsiveness or change
                                                                                                    with different levels of support. Did
                                                                                                    they need a simple repetition to be
                                                                                                    successful or did they need visual,
                                                                                                    tactile, and auditory cues with
                                                                                                    multiple repetitions?

                                                                                                    When you are practicing the skill
                                                                                                    together, do they take the lead or do
                                                                                                    you still need to lead them? Are they
                                                                                                    starting to self-correct errors that you
                                                                                                    worked on?

                                                                                                    On the retest, are they producing
                                                                                                    sounds differently? Are they including
                                                                                                    additional story grammar
                                                                                                    components? Did they master the
                                                                                                    skill you taught after your short
                                                                                                    lesson?
