ASHA Course Code: Service Delivery Associated with Speech, Language, Hearing and Related Disorders – 7010

Reduce the time you spend on the referral process and simultaneously improve your referrals and your relationship with teachers.

Are you ready to master this process and have the referral process HELP you rather than make you want to crawl back into bed and pull the sheets up over your head?

Are you ready to be seen as the collaborating language expert that your campus needs?

Are you ready to reduce your overwhelm?

Then let’s do this!

This presentation presents a complete referral framework that was created in response to calls from speech-language pathologists all over the US, who reported that tracking referrals is often a nightmare. We explain the step-by-step process that makes the transition possible and profile free referral documents so you can begin immediately. It also includes over 70 downloadable documents for free! It’s everything you will need to transform your speech referral process.

I organized this course into bite-sized morsels so that you can easily digest it quickly and between everything else you have going on.

There are tons of resources so we wanted to organize them here in one spot but they are also included in each lesson that they are related to. Take a look and then click below to start the first lesson.

Here is the link out to the main referral process explanation video and online documents. It is really huge! – 57 pages and can be overwhelming to most non-special education professionals. This is the best link to share with other staff members so that everyone can download what they need, at that particular time.

The referral process for speech and language concerns is often the source of frustration for all professionals involved. A paradoxical situation exists on many campuses where participation in the speech referral process leads to a dramatic increase in workload for an SLP while avoidance of the referral process leads to a dramatic increase in testing. Conversely, the referral process can be used to improve relationships with other professionals, improve the types of referrals that the SLP receives, and produce data that serves as a substantial portion of the evaluation.

This presentation demonstrates how the referral process can be engineered to yield significant benefits. A case study across two campuses profiles how successful outcomes can be achieved. Workload was reduced while simultaneously improving the outcomes for students. Teachers felt more comfortable making appropriate referrals, SLPs spent less time on evaluations in which students did not qualify and more time on appropriate referrals.
