Teaching Labeling Skills 9.4
6. Place Printed Words Throughout Their Environment – Printed words, even for
children who are not yet reading, emphasize that all objects have labels. These can
be name cards taped to any object in the room. This can be a word wall of all new
vocabulary that accompanies pictures. This can also be a child’s word—his name,
and a picture of him and his class.
Labeling objects is something that you are probably already doing with your student or
child. Get the maximum benefit from these ac vi es by making the new words important, by
integra ng new words into a child’s current play and daily experiences, and by naturally
weaving them in and out of conversa ons.
