Part 3: The Science Behind Dynamic Assessment
Dynamic assessment enables us to look at a child’s
performance and account for any results skewed by cultural
influence, second language patterns, or lack of experience.
That’s a tall order. The research that supports its
effectiveness also gives us the five needed steps to keep us
consistent in the myriad of ways we are expected to test.
For those of you for whom RESEARCH=BORING, we’ve got
you covered. You need to read this part to gain the buy-in
needed to use DA but you don’t have to get sleepy. We will
talk you through the analytical aspects of DA and then show
you videos of what it looks like in the classroom.
Part 4: How Dynamic Assessment Is Used
Our evaluation process at Bilinguistics has been refined
across 20+ years of testing birth-to-3, pediatric clinic, and
school populations. This is thousands of children, mostly
bilingual, and EVERY report contains non-standardized
testing like dynamic assessment. It’s not an added luxury.
DA increases our diagnostic accuracy and helps us hone in
on appropriate goals. We’ll show you what we do.
Part 5: Case Studies, Please!!!
Yes, we have caseloads. This means this is not theoretical.
For many of our complex cases, we ask parents for
permission to record videos so that the success their child
experiences can be magnified across the nation. The easiest
way to learn is to see it in action so we will end with real
kids, real consternation with the results we got from
standardized testing, and how we used DA to arrive at a
confident diagnosis and goals.
