Modifying Intervention
Planning ahead is essen al when working with children with profound disabili es. In order to access
the curriculum, ac vi es may need to be modified to take into account physical, emo onal, or
communica on impairments. The modifica ons page of each lesson provides sugges ons for
modifying interven on for students with a variety of physical and behavioral impairments, as well as
ways to modify for varying levels of communica on.
Each lesson has a modifica ons table that is pre-filled with sugges ons for many common
impairments. By making changes to how the material is accessed, we allow the student to be
successful while retaining the core knowledge that is the focus of the lesson. The Community
Workers example on the following page demonstrates how this can be achieved. Also, use a blank
table to create your own modifica ons table if you are planning to implement your own lessons with
groups or individual students.
