Chapter 10: KOREAN

Patterns of Native Language Influence: Example:
Replacement of /ʃ/ with /s/ she – see
Replacement of /tʃ/ with “ts” beach – beets
Replacement of /ɹ/ with /l/ rice – lice
Replacement of /æ/with /ɛ/ hem for ham
Replacement of /θ/ with /s/ thick – sick
Addition of /I/ or /ə/ at end of word church – churchy or churchuh

Only seven consonants occur in syllable‐final
                   position: /p, t, k, m, n, ŋ, l/. Fricatives and
affricates never appear in word‐final position.

Nasalization of final stops preceding a nasal sound I took mom home‐I toong mom
                                                                    home
Allophonic variations may result in errors for packet‐pagget
                   sounds in certain positions. apple‐abble

                   /p, t, k/ become voiced stops [b, d, g] between
                   sonorant phonemes.

Omission, addition, or distortion of sounds in a clap – cuh‐lap
                   word‐initial or word‐final consonant clusters
Consonant clusters only occur in inter‐syllabic
                   positions.
