                       Quick Tips for Assessing

                                   in Any Language

More than 6,500 languages are spoken on this planet, and there is a way to positively

approach assessments of clients and students from culturally and linguistically diverse

backgrounds. This text is designed to simplify the process for a handful of languages, but you

can follow these steps to implement this process for other languages. Here’s how:

                   1. Research the child’s native language. Type the language into any search engine and,

presto! There is a lot of information out there. How do we get what we need? We

approach it like a news reporter. We find a source, and then look for at least one other

source to verify the information. There is a high degree of variation in language

development, which is often seen in the developmental norms that are available.

                   2. If you are assessing articulation, look at the sounds that exist in that particular language.

Typically, you can find a chart with the sounds used in that language.
