Course Type: Video – 1 1/2 hours
ASHA Course Code: Phonology/Articulatory Disorders – 3050
Have you ever wondered if your speech diagnoses are influenced by things in addition to the sounds that a child produces? This presentation highlights ways to take the entire child into consideration so that we get accurate qualifications and great goals.
Traditional methods of phonological assessment rely heavily on quantitative measures both under- and over-diagnose bilingual children with communication disabilities. A recommended evaluation protocol that takes into consideration both quantitative as well as qualitative aspects of phonological errors and social context will be presented.

This presentation will use the framework of Disability Studies and Critical Race Theory (Discrit)(Annamma, Ferri, & Connor, 2016) to position misdiagnosis of speech sound disorders in bilingual Lantinx Spanish-English speaking preschoolers. Traditional methods of phonological assessment both under- and over-diagnose bilingual children with communication disabilities, contributing to the school-to-prison pipeline. Routine assessments over-rely on quantitative measures for diagnosis while qualitative measures of phonology may uncover important aspects of speech sound production that include both social context of communication as well as developmental abilities. A recommended evaluation protocol that takes into consideration both the quantitative aspects of traditional phonological assessment for bilinguals (Fabiano-Smith, Privette, & An, 2021) as well as qualitative aspects of phonological errors and social context (Sieg & Fabiano-Smith, in prep.) will be presented. Clinical challenges and advantages of this approach will be detailed across multiple preschool-based environments. The social impact of communication disabilities for children from minoritized language communities will also be discussed.
Participants will:
- Describe contributing factors of misdiagnosis of speech sound disorders in bilingual children
- Describe how the social context of communication can be incorporated into the assessment process
- Incorporate qualitative measures into the process of diagnostic decision-making
Time-Ordered Agenda:
10 minutes: Introduction to the topic
10 minutes: Shortcomings of traditional methods of assessment of speech sound disorders
20 minutes: Discussion of Disability Studies and Critical Race Theory as it relates to the misdiagnosis of speech sound disorders in bilingual Latinx Spanish-English speaking preschoolers
