Approximately one out of fifty-nine children in the United States lives with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Understanding the behavioral, social and communication needs of individuals with ASD can maximize your efforts as a speech-language pathologist. This comprehensive course will provide effective, evidence-based practices with family-centered practice in mind.

This session provided evidence-based practices for speech-language pathologists working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Functional strategies to address behavioral, pragmatic and communication needs were discussed to maximize clinical and educational efforts. Additionally, family-centered practice was discussed to support the comprehensive needs of the client/student.

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder and how it is diagnosed.
  • Identify effective, evidence-based practices for clients and students with Autism Spectrum Disorder to address receptive and expressive communication, behavioral and social/pragmatic needs.
  • List considerations for family-centered practices when supporting the needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Participants will leave with a practical system they can implement immediately, along with renewed confidence in using language sampling as a central component of ethical, effective, and culturally responsive assessment.

Practitioners attending live events will be asked to answer questions at the end of the course about what they learned and how they will use the information they learned in practice. Once the questions (below) are completed, participants will receive their certificate.
