ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

These lesson plans began with an idea that was supported and cul vated by the team of

speech-language pathologists at Bilinguis cs. Together, we developed materials for each unit based
on evidence-based prac ces and our own clinical exper se. It is our hope that speech-language
pathologists, educa onal professionals, and parents will use these lessons as a means to more closely
collaborate to improve the communica on skills of students with significant impairments.

We owe a debt of gra tude to the school districts in Central Texas that enabled us to
implement the research that became this book. These lesson plans were field-tested with students
with a variety of impairments across many academic seCngs. They have been tweaked and honed to

be effec ve, fun, and efficient. Most importantly, using these lessons in the classrooms allowed us to
align each theme with academic curriculum.

Special thanks to Dr. Ellen Kester and Sco6 Prath for their encouragement and support
through the process of developing this book. I also wish to thank Anna Ubels, Kris n Sankovich, Alisa
Baron, Emmy Kolanko, Mary Bauman, Jissel Anaya, Farinam Pletka, Hayden Lambert and Maritza
Jacobs for their efforts in designing and crea ng materials. It has truly been a labor of love!

                Sincerely,

                Patricia Villarreal, M.S., CCC-SLP
