How to Use Storybooks in Speech Language Intervention



               Modifications Table
               Here is an example of a modifications table that you can make for each story book you use.  Fill out

               this table once and you will have it for all the years to come.

               Impairment Considerations

                Physical Impairments-     Felt board to reduce travel but increase participation.
                Low Mobility
                                          For example: animal cutouts on popsicle sticks, flashlight/light pointer

                AAC devices               Visuals and Templates needed:


                                          Example: Go Talk 20, Switch Visuals,  Topic vocabulary on Big Mac

                Visual Impairment         Use objects from tactile schedule to symbolize curriculum vocabulary

                Hearing impairment        Signs (mom, dad, school), AAC device, pictures/visuals, sentence strips



                Behavior                  Personal object/activity

                                          For example: characters on popsicle sticks



               Communication Abilities

                 Nonverbal               Joint attention

                                         Use picture/word/sign to request preferred object/activity

                                         Identify curriculum vocabulary


                Nonverbal + gestures     Follow directions

                                         Imitate CV, VCV, CVCV combinations (C = consonants, V = vowels)

                Low verbal- 1 word       Produce CV, VCV, CVCV combinations


                                         Label objects and target specific vocabulary

                Verbal                   Expressive goals

                                         For example: Answer basic wh- questions, prepositions,  and pronouns
