                      Pre- and post-reading activities

                      The following activities may be used during pre- or post- reading of The Gigantic Turnip.

                      Pre-Reading Discussion Questions/Preguntas de discusión


                      Use these activities prior to reading the book to assess prior knowledge, introduce new
                      vocabulary, and teach concepts related to the story.

                         1.  What is your favorite fruit or vegetable?/ ¿Cual es tu fruta o verdura favorita?

                         2.  Do you know what a turnip is?/ ¿Saben que es un nabo?
                         3.  What does “gigantic” mean? What is another word that means the same thing?/

                             ¿Qué significa “gigante”/qué es otra palabra que significa lo mismo?

                         4.  Does it look like a vegetable that you know?/ ¿Parece a un vegetal que conoce?

                         5.  What do you think the story will be about?/ ¿De qué piensan que va a tratar la

                             historia?
                         6.  What characters might be in the story?/ ¿Cuáles personajes van a aparecer en el

                             cuento?

                         7.  What animals live on a farm?/ ¿Cuáles animales viven en una granja?

                         10. How do plants grow?/ ¿Cómo se crecen las plantas?

                         11. Discuss the parts of the story using the visuals in this Lit Kit (depending on the age
                             and ability of the child).  Have each student make predictions about the story
                             elements they will find. When reading the book, refer back to these visuals to
                             reinforce story elements as they are introduced in the reading.
