How to Use Storybooks in Speech Language Intervention
Pre‐reading discussion
Pre-reading questions and discussions are designed to tie the students’ knowledge, experiences, and
ideas to the content of the book. These activities pare well with the graphic organizers. Sticking with
the example above, questions can include: How do you get to school? How do your parents get to
work? Have you ever been on a bike/plane/boat?
Illustration discussion
What we know about children who are not generating
rich language is that their utterances lack detail.
Drawing, writing, and painting is a way to have a child
actively engage in describing an object or vocabulary
topic. Students who have no experience with drawing
or writing can participate in group drawing where you
draw on a table-size piece of paper and everyone
contributes. The student creates a story using
illustrations from the selected book. Scaffolding
techniques may be used to facilitate higher semantic
and syntactic complexity.
