Literacy-Based Speech Language Therapy Activities


                       A Complete Discourse Example

                       Let’s start by taking a look at the end goal and then talk about getting there.  Success means that a
                       child:


                            Draws four pictures from the story in the correct sequence
                            Writes minimally four sentences, one per picture
                            Starts each sentence with one cohesive element (first, then, after, at the end)
                            Produces content in each sentence that can answer WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE
                            Has a way to double-check his or her work
                            Knows what is missing and can correct it
                            Knows how to evaluate a peer’s work and offer constructive ways to improve.

                       Here is an example in Spanish for “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”  The pictures are drawn first.
                       Then the sentences are written.  WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE are written from memory on the

                       side of the page.  WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE are circled in distinct colors.  Each story-part is
                       studied to make sure it has 1 WHO, 1 WHAT, 1 WHERE, and 1 WHEN.
