ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This endeavor is the product of the cumulative efforts of many people. It includes the
research of professionals who have studied these languages and dialects, as well as
perspectives and input from native speakers of each language. Dr. Ellen Kester started this
work nearly a decade ago by comparing and contrasting Spanish and English for use at
Bilinguistics and in school districts. When she served as co‐chair of the Task Force on Cultural
and Linguistic Diversity for the Texas Speech‐Language‐Hearing Association, she and
Margarita Limon‐Ordoñez led the Task Force in the development of articles that focused on
different languages. Those articles, which received strong praise from the readership of the
Communicologist, address many languages not addressed in this book and can be accessed
on the Texas Speech‐Language Hearing Association website.
The Bilinguistics team, which evaluates and works with children from many different
language backgrounds each year, carried this work forward. The team is excited and eager to
share with other educators. We know it will be a worthwhile resource for all who use it.
Special thanks go to Scott Prath, who oversaw and directed the final production of
the project, and Ladaun Jackson, who served as project manager to guide the completion of
the chapters. For their efforts in writing, reviewing, and revising these chapters, thanks go to
Alisa Baron, Mary Bauman, Alexandra Estrella, Carolyn Artime Gutierrez, Alyson Hendry,
Emmy Kolanko, Katherine Marting, Valeritta Liddle, Phuong Lien Palafox, Farinam Pletka,
Anna Ubels, Patricia Villarreal, Cristina Villaseñor, and Marie Wirka. The Bilinguistics team also
wishes to thank all of the native and near‐native speakers whose knowledge and experiences
ii
provide personal and cultural perspectives that enrich the information in this book.
