This is not just another book of lesson plans and speech therapy ideas. We know that our
success was related to what we used in intervention but equally important was how we did it.
We will share with you ways to be highly successful working with young children. We begin the
book with the following sections:
Getting Started
Preparing for each lesson plan
Pre-session setup—Getting Ready
Session Overview— 30 minutes at a glance
Visual Schedule Pictures
Explanation of visuals/schedule and how to target goals for each
Creating a schedule and choosing your targets
Lesson Plan Templates

We know that different students have different learning styles and when we teach across different
modalities our students have greater success. We designed each unit to address a wide range of
speech and language deficits, while incorporating songs, books, and floor– and table-activities.
The content of these units was driven by theory and research in the fields of child development,
communication development, and early intervention. The lessons and activities in this book are
based on Vygotsky’s (1967) social learning theories. Social learning theories view social
interaction as critical to development. Therefore, the entire professional team is seen as the
child’s guides, and the child is the apprentice who learns from the adult models (Rogoff, 1990).
Strategies and activities in this book are based on Kindergarten curriculum, family involvement,
and group interaction (peers) so that a child’s primary social interactionists are key contributors
to communicative behaviors.
