There are two big considerations when working with bilingual students. One is that we need to be keenly aware of the fact that bilingual students are over-referred by teachers for speech-language evaluations, and the second is that bilingual students are often over-identified by speech-language pathologists as having speech and language disorders. Fortunately, speech-language pathologists can play an important role in reducing these over-referrals.

In this presentation, we will discuss the demographics of our professional fields and of the populations we serve, the reasons over-referrals and over-identification occur, and ways we can make an impact on the referral process and the assessment process to ensure that students from diverse backgrounds are accurately diagnosed. Putting students on the correct educational trajectory benefits the students, their families, the teachers, and the school.
