ASHA Course Code: Fluency Disorders (e.g., stuttering, cluttering) – 1010

As speech-language pathologists, we perform fluency assessments far less frequently than we do assessments of language or articulation, so we may feel underprepared when the need arises on our caseloads. In this presentation, I’ll share the tasks I include in my fluency assessments, tips for analysis and goal setting, and a cool tool I created to speed up your analysis.

Early in my career I did fluency analyses so seldom that my approach was not at all systematic, and I didn’t have a sense of whether I was including all that I needed to include in my analysis. I also didn’t have a good system for categorizing disfluencies or an efficient way of calculating them. There are certainly a number of approaches out there in the field, and I won’t cover every aspect of or trend in fluency assessment in this workshop but I will share information to help you conduct a thorough fluency evaluation with a systematic approach that will yield the information you need to set appropriate goals for your client.

Participants will:

  • Describe 3 important pieces of background information that inform the assessment process.
  • Describe 3 important tasks to incorporate to complete a thorough assessment.
  • Use a coding system to describe the different types of stuttering and non-stuttering disfluencies.
  • Describe cutoff points for those considered people who stutter and those who do not.
  • Use a fluency calculator to facilitate the analysis of disfluencies.

Time-ordered Agenda:

05 minutes: Introduction and Disclosures
10 minutes: Gathering and evaluating the information that inform the assessment process
20 minutes: Assessment Tasks
15 minutes: Analysis of Speech Samples
05 minutes: Dynamic Assessment/Trial Therapy
05 minutes: Conclusion and Questions
