We will walk through the steps necessary to conduct an effective evaluation, taking into consideration family culture, language exposure and use, and learning potential. This workshop will equip practitioners with the tools, resources, and confidence needed to make accurate diagnostic decisions for children who speak any language(s).

We share a 3-step process for bilingual speech evaluations. These steps incorporate shared and unshared sounds, rules for how sounds can be combined in different languages, and developmental norms. We discuss the framework, apply it, and show case studies with bilingual speech-language pathologists as well as monolingual speech-language pathologists working with interpreters.

Speech-language pathologists who work with children who speak a language other than English will build confidence in their assessment and intervention skills. This will increase diagnostic accuracy and facilitate intervention with effective targets.

Participants will be able to:
• Describe expected patterns versus unexpected errors in bilingual speech production
• List the three steps needed in a bilingual speech evaluation
• Identify appropriate speech targets for bilingual children with speech sound disorders
