Understanding Cultural Parameters when Assessing and Treating Diverse Children
Learn about the cultural parameters of diverse communities and understand how these parameters can influence the assessment of children from diverse backgrounds.
Cultural beliefs influence how clients describe health problems, the manner in which they communicate their symptoms, who they seek for provision of health care, how long they remain in care, and how they assess the care provided.
Children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds comprise almost 35% of speech-language pathologists’ caseloads across employment settings. In response to this need, this course identified and described cultural parameters and how these parameters apply specifically to communication assessment and intervention.
Participants will be able to:
- Identify and describe the nine common cultural parameters
- Summarize the importance of developing intercultural knowledge and skills in order to optimize patient outcomes
- List two ways to facilitate success in treatment as clients are more secure and responsive in culturally familiar environments
- Demonstrate how to analyze informal language results to account for cultural influence
