Cultural differences, language influence, and socio-economic status can impact how successful we are in therapy. That’s why we put together this course to show you how to adapt existing therapy materials and goals in order to take cultural differences and classroom needs into account.

Learn how to improve the effectiveness of your therapy activities to account for individual difference and increase therapy outcomes. Strategies for literacy-based intervention and increased vocabulary are presented along with downloadable therapy materials. We share therapy goals for Spanish-English speakers in early childhood, pre-school, and school-age populations.

This course discussed issues to consider in selecting the language of intervention. Speech Language Pathologists selected appropriate language goals for students who are bilingual and identified appropriate approaches to address the goals. Different intervention approaches, including function, attribute, category therapy and storybook intervention were used in case studies.

Participants will:

Describe the cognitive process for acquiring and storing new vocabulary
Create therapy plans that include 2 strategies to effectively serve children from second-language backgrounds
List 3 cultural and socio-economic issues that can affect therapeutic outcomes
Identify 2 appropriate language intervention goals for bilingual children
