Successfully separate language differences caused by second language influence from true disorder.  Learn about language structures that are affected by bilingualism as well as developmental errors, cross-linguistic errors, and atypical errors.

By understanding how language structures vary and can influence one another, an SLP can make a more informed decision when determining whether a bilingual child is presenting with a language difference or a language disorder.

This course discusses bilingual development and highlights the similarities and differences between the two languages.   The goal of the course is to build clinical judgment so that we are better able to evaluate, treat, and make decisions about children on our caseload that do not share our culture or language.

We present a framework for evaluating the use of language in order to categorize expected and unexpected errors.  This course concludes with case studies to show how knowledge on language development  has a tangible positive impact on our caseload.

Participants will be able to:

  • Contrast typical language development for bilinguals with language development when only one language is spoken at home
  • Demonstrate language therapy techniques that have been shown to be successful when treating diverse caseloads
  • List four similarities in typical monolingual and bilingual development
  • Formulate intervention goals that take bilingual development into consideration
