Stuttering Resources in Austin, TX and abroad
February 11, 2010
Austin area SLPs:
I am a member of the National Stuttering Association (NSA) and a person who stutters. I would like to share with speech-language pathologists in the Austin area information about the newly formed NSA Austin Chapter.
The NSA is the largest support organization in the United States for people who stutter, and a terrific resource for those affected by stuttering, their families and professionals. The backbone of the organization is the more than 80 local chapters around the country. Chapter meetings are peer facilitated and designed to provide support, self-help and education for people who stutter — as well as for those interested in stuttering.
Since the formation of the NSA Austin Chapter in the spring of 2009, our meetings have drawn people who stutter, their family members and friends, as well as speech-language pathologists and student SLPs.
We currently holds monthly meetings at the University of Texas and our next meeting will be Monday, January 25 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in CMA 7.208 at UT (more information can be found on our chapter’s Web site).
I also encourage you to check out the NSA’s Web site, which provides a range of information about stuttering and the success of support groups around the country. As a person who has struggled with stuttering my entire life, I can tell you having a strong network for support and education has been vital to the success I have achieved so far.
Please pass on information about our chapter to your clients who stutter. Although the current chapter is primarily intended for adults who stutter, there is room for youth involvement in the future. Our chapter is also an excellent resource for parents of young children who stutter.
If you have any questions about the NSA or our local chapter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your support of the NSA and people who stutter!
