Early Vocalizations in Speech

October 27, 2008

Here is a question someone asked at the last speech meeting..  Anyone else have suggestions?

“I am trying to find information on speech production prior to language productions.  Basically sound and vocalization patterns.  Does anyone have information on this in Spanish?”

This is a quick read in the CEU section of our website,

Working with a an ECI client with a cochlear implant

October 20, 2008

Hi all,

I had some success with a 2 year-old girl who is about 6 months post implant that I wanted to share but would love any other resources or suggestions.  She has been having great difficulty imitating movements with her mouth although she can imitate any other physical movement.  She also only phonated her sounds which seems to be typical (http://bilinguistics.com/education/abad_0705/index.php).  So she is now phonating and whispering her sounds when she is touching her mother’s throat.  She copies the sounds but is yet to copy facial movements.  To get her to close her lips an adult has to use their fingers to press her lips together.

When you ask her to copy you or do the same thing, she closes her lips by using her fingers to press her lips together!  So how do you instigate copying facial movements when she won’t copy silly faces, fill her cheeks, etc?

THE CAT WHITE – understanding the influence of Spanish on English syntax for English Language Learners.

October 14, 2008

Understanding how a Spanish-speaking child learning English as a second language may transfer certain rules from one language to another is critical for assessment.  It is important to help professionals be able to differentiate a difference versus a disorder in children learning English as a second language.  Rules of Spanish syntax that differ from English include double plural markings, flexible word order, non-obligatory pronouns, and absence of auxiliary verbs.  By learning what are typical patterns in bilingual language development, one will be able to assess and appropriately identify those children with a true language disorder.

Good Bilingual Story Books

October 6, 2008

Hey Everyone,

Here is a list of bilingual books that have good translations and work really, really well with many speech and language goals.  All of these also work well with the literacy-based intervention paper here: http://bilinguistics.com/education/abad_0712/index.php
